    THYROID, LINGUAL (continued) Associated Anomalies: Thyroglossal duct cyst, sinus or fistula; agenesis of thyroid gland. Hereditary Factors: Unknown. Treatment and Outlook: In small lesions, no treatment. Larger ones which may be traumatized and painful are removed surgically. Nonab- sorbed infrahyoid portion of the thyroglossal duct, caused by failure of atrophy of the lower end of the thyroglossal duct. It points superiorly from the isthmus of the fully developed thyroid. Prevalence: No data. Associated Anomalies: None. Hereditary Factors: No data. Treatment and Outlook: No treatment required. Controversy exists regarding the etiology, but the condition is thought to arise from failure of fusion of lateral anlage (from ultimobranchial bodies) with the median part of the thyroid gland. Cysts or neoplasia may arise within this tissue. Prevalence: Rare. Associated Anomalies: None. Hereditary Factors: No data. Treatment and Outlook: Removal is indicated only if neoplasia develops.
