    Kala-azar.—2,009 deaths with a death rate of 0-09 per miile from kala- ar were recorded during the year under report against 2,599 deaths with a ath rate of 0*1 per miile in the previous year; thus yielding a decrease of 1-6 per cent, in 1950 over the figure of 1949. Out of the total deaths due this cause as recorded in the year under report 482 deaths were registered in ban areas and 1,527 in rural areas, the death rates being *11 and *09 per [He respectively; against 0-15 and 0-12 per miile in the previous year. Measles.—A considerable increase in the mortality figures due to measles as recorded in 1950 as the figures rose to 1,191 from 628 in the previous ar. The death rate was 0-1 against 0-03 per miile in the previous year. I Enteric fevers.—The mortality figures due to this group of causes showed a crease of 7*8 per cent, in 1950 when compared with 1949, the figures being 086 and 4,434, respectively, with a death rate of 0*2 per miile. In 1950 impared with the rural areas these diseases were more prevalent in towns, e mortality rates being 0-52 per miile for urban areas and 0-11 for rural eas. Influenza.—Three hundred deaths due to this cause were recorded in 1950 ;ainst 265 deaths in the previous year; the death rate was 0*01 per miile for )th these years. ! Cerebrospinal fever.—Compared with the figures of 1949, the mortality due : cerebrospinal fever showed a decrease of 12*5 per cent, in 1950. Out of 323 deaths recorded in the State during the year under report 260 iere in urban areas and 63 only in the rural areas. The death rates were •2, -06 and -004 per miile for the State, urban and rural areas, respectively. Black water fever.—20 deaths due to black water fever were recorded in tht tate during 1950 against 40 in the previous year. Seventeen out of these venty deaths occurred in the rural areas and only three in the urban areas, he death rate was 0-001 for the State and the urban and rural areas as well. Other fevers.—101,163 deaths with a death rate of 4-7 per miile were -corded under the head “other fevers”, during the year under report, against 00,412 deaths. Dysentery and diarrhoea.—24,795 deaths from dysentery and diarrhoea with death rate of 1 • 1 per miile of population were registered during 1950 against 3,604 deaths with a death rate of IT per miile in the previous year. The eath rates in the urban and rural areas were 2-4 and 0-8 per miile in 1950 gainst 2-0 and 0-9 per miile, respectively, in the previous year. Respiratory diseases.—This group of diseases were responsible for 34,475 eaths in 1950 against 34,787 deaths in the previous year. The total death rate >r the State was 1-6 per miile for both these years. In the urban and rural reas the death rates were 3-6 and 1-1 per miile respectively in 1950 against •2 and 1-3 in the previous year. The highest death rate (5-0) per miile was iturned by the city of Calcutta in 1950 followed by the districts of Jalpaigurj nd Darjeeling with death rates of 4*6 and 3-0 per miile, respectively and lowest eath rate 0-3 per miile was returned by the Murshidabad district. In 1950 pneumonia was responsible for 47 per cent, and tuberculosis of ings for 23 per cent, of the total deaths due to all respiratory diseases.
