    Preface Cloning a foreign gene or a gene of interest for expression in a particular host system is a major task in recombinant DNA technology. The manipulations require extensive knowledge of the regulatory mechanisms of gene expression and basic understanding of vector-host relationships as well as skills in recom¬ binant DNA techniques. It is now possible to clone and express a gene of interest in widely different host systems, from bacteria to yeast, plant cells, and mammalian cells. In this book, we have attempted to cover all of these systems so that the reader may quickly learn the versatility of the systems and obtain an overview of the technol¬ ogy involved in the manipulation of gene expression. Furthermore, I hope that the reader will leam enough from the various approaches to be able to develop systems and to arrange for a gene of particular interest to express in a particular system. The appendix contains two useful state-of-the-art techniques. The original idea of putting together a book under the present title came from a symposium with the same title that was held at the State University of New York at Stony Brook in May 1982. Although several of the contributors to this volume were, in fact, speakers at that symposium, this volume has gone far beyond the symposium in the breadth and depth of the material covered. We are indeed fortunate that people who are in the forefront of the field have contributed chapters to this book.
