The letter is an appeal (1pp, 4to), for funds for the relief of chimney sweepers' climbing boys. A printed prospectus and list of subscribers accompanies the letter and is headed by Jonas Hanway.

Biographical note
Jonas Hanway was a merchant traveller and a philanthropist, who moved from Russia to London after 1750. He is best known as one of the chief founders of the Marine soicety (1756) and the Magdalen Charity (1758). He was also a reformer of the Foundling hospital and pioneered the umbrella. Hanway's Act which aimed to lift children out of poverty is named after him for a pamplet he wrote on the cause.
