    bonpoint, are generally followed by more or less of inflam- matory blush, and sometimes by very smart inflammation, in which case there is an exudation of a faint-smelling sero- purulent looking fluid, and some disposition to chapping of the skin. This is the erythema intertrigo of authors. It is attended with a very evident increase of heat and some degree of smarting in the parts affected, but with little constitutional disturbance, although, when it is extensive, the pulse will get frequent. The cheeks of children when teething are often observed to be affected with one or two bright inflammatory patches ; and any accidental circumscribed cutaneous excitement, such as the sting of a gnat, the presence of any other affection, cr of a wound or sore, as Well as the distension of the integu- ments by anasarca, all cause a superficial inflammation, ac- companied with heat and itching or smarting, which have received different denominations by nosologists, but which may well be assimilated and placed under one head—ery- thema from irritation. Among (females and young persons of both sexes, a number of small red spots, irregularly circumscribed, slightly promi- nent, the size of a herring scale or split pea, and of a bright red colour, which soon acquires a purplish cast about their centres, and disappears almost entirely under pressure, are frequently thrown out on the neck, breast, arms, and face,— eryth. papulation. This affection is generally preceded by some constitutional disturbance,—loss of appetite, sense of lassitude, slight fever, &c. It is also an occasional attendant upon attacks of acute rheumatism, when the spots, by run- ning into one another, often form clusters of considerable extent. The elevations, within from thirty-six to forty-eight hours, sink to the level of the surrounding skin, and the red blush then remains alone, to disappear after continuing visible from one to two weeks.
