    I ON THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SPLASHING SOUND OF THE STOMACH The splashing sounds of the stomach are pro- duced when water and air are agitated together, when either the whole body or the stomach alone is shaken. The latter is done when we tap with the fingers on the relaxed abdominal walls over the stomach. To obtain the splash- ing sound by means of such tapping the pa- tient must be in the recumbent position. The sound, however, can also be produced by sha- king the whole body while the patient stands upright.
