    PENGUIN BOOKS NOT IN OUR GENES Steven Rose has been Professor of Biology at the Open University since it started in 1969. He was trained as a biochemist at the University of Cambridge and has worked in Oxford and London. His laboratory re¬ search is about the ways in which experience - especially during early development - affects the properties of the cells of the brain, but he has also written and worked extensively on issues concerning the social framework and consequences of science. His books include The Chemis¬ try of Life, of which a new edition will be published by Penguin in 1991, and The Conscious Brain (Penguin) and the edited collections Against Biological Determinism and Towards a Liberatory Biology (1982). With sociologist Hilary Rose he has written Science and Society (Penguin), The Radicalization of Science and The Political Economy of Science. Richard Lewontin was born in 1929. He was an undergraduate student of biology at Harvard and a graduate student in statistics and genetics at Columbia University, where hereceived his Ph.D. in 1954. He has taught and undertaken research in a number of universities, including North Carolina State University, the University of Rochester, the University of Chicago and Harvard University. He is now Alexander Agassiz Professor of Zoology and Professor of Biology at Harvard Uni¬ versity and Professor of Population Sciences at the Harvard School of Public Health. His professional career has been devoted to the study of the genetics of populations and evolution, in particular to both theor¬ etical and experimental studies of human genetics and genetics of other organisms. His previous books include The Genetic Basis of Evolutionary Change and Human Diversity, and he has also published about 120 related papers. Professor Lewontin was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, but resigned over a question of political principle related to the use of the Academy's prestige to support secret war research. Leon J. Kamin was bom in Taunton, Massachusetts, in 1927. He has received both B.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University. From 1954 to 1968 he was successively Professor of Psychology at McGill
