    ADVERTISEMENT. THERE are Thirty-four Plates in the present Vo- lume, devoted to the History of British DiurNAL LepIpopTEeRA (BUTTERFLIES); and these Plates contain One Hundred and Forty-seven Figures, drawn, engraved, and coloured from the objects themselves in almost every instance: there are, be- sides, two Plates of an elementary description, which contain Twenty-nine Figures, making in all Ons HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-SIX ILLUSTRATIONS. Be- ing devoted to the elucidation of so very interesting and beautiful a portion of British Insects, we trust the Volume will be as highly appreciated as any of its predecessors, if not more so. Every pains has been bestowed to render the Illustrations and De- scriptions as complete a manual of the Diurnal Lepidoptera of our own country, as was possible in the space to which we have judged it advisable to li- mit the subject: In following out these our anxious endeavours to render the Volume as useful and popular as in
