    The number of cases of infectious diseases notified during the year was 85, a decrease of 14 as compared with the year 1903. The distribution of these cases over the several divisions of the District is exhibited in Table 3 accompanying this Report. Diphtheria.—Four cases recorded, but no deaths. One of these cases was contracted in Bolton ; the other 3 were due to choked and foul drains near and belonging to the infected houses. Erysipelas.—The cases notified were 6, with one death in the case of an infant under 1 year in age. Enteric Fever.—Four cases notified but no deaths recorded. Three of these cases occurred in one house and were caused by opening and relaying defective drains in the house yard. The other one was probably due to drinking infected water at his place of work. Scarlet Fever.—The number of notified cases was 71, distributed as follows:—Eagley, Bromley Cross, Egerton, and Chapeltown wards 29; Edgworth and Entwistle wards 33 ; Belmont ward 6, and Bradshaw ward 3. Happily no deaths were recorded. Of the 29 cases in the lower wards 13 occurred in the Eagley ward, and were in continuation of a slight epidemic commencing in the last month of the year 1903, the greatest intensity falling upon the months of February, March, and April, and terminating during May. The rest of the cases were sporadic and were spread over the whole year in the wards mentioned. Belmont had 6 cases, 3 being due to previous cases in the village ; one was contracted in Eiverpool, and the remaining 2 were due to direct contact with this one. Bradshaw Ward had 3 cases, all of them resulting from contact with children at Affetside School, who come principally from the Tottington district, where the disease was prevalent. Edgworth contributes 33 cases. 6 of these were scattered over the ward, more or less isolated from each other, 1 was contracted at Ainsworth, Bolton, 1 at Tottington, and 3 were in sequence to a case at the Hillock on August 21st, the origin of which could not be satisfactorily determined. The remaining cases, 27 in number, constituted an epidemic of the disease, commencing on October 26th in this ward. The first case notified in this district was on April nth from 8 Hob Lane, a scholar at Hob Lane School. No other case was notified until October 26th, from Lower Mill Farm Cottages, the origin of which could not be traced.
