About this work

Description

Made just prior to the opening of the first British sex-selection clinic, this programme looks briefly at the history of attempts at sex selection before focusing on the the career of Dr. Roy Ericsson who pioneered the technique. Known as sperm separation, it has made a fortune for Dr. Ericsson who claims worldwide success in his work. Taking part in the programme are Dr. Hapgood, Archbishop of York - "Children should not be designer products" - Claire Short - who warns of an "unbalanced generation", in which boys would predominate, and Mary Warnock, who raises no moral objections and thinks it would be difficult to make the technique illegal, but declares herself unimpressed by the project. Not surprisingly, Dr. Ericsson refuses to be drawn into a discussion of moral issues.
