Description

Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford was a minister of Charles I of England during the 11 years' personal rule. After a contest between the King and Parliament, John Pym launched Strafford's impeachment and had him locked in the Tower in 1640. Strafford was beheaded at Tower Hill on 12 May 1641

The Earl of Strafford going to execution. The original picture in the collection of His Grace the Duke of Sutherland. Painted by Paul De La Roche. Engraved by J. Rogers Lettering beneath the image: "The next morning" says Archbishop Laud, "as he passed by he turned towards me and took the solemnest leave that I think was ever, by any at distance taken one of another". Solemn ideed it was, beyond all example, for Strafford halted before the window, and when his old venerable friend came to it, bowed himself to the ground ... Lettering continues with a quote from Sothey's Book of the Church
