About this work

Description

The mouth parts of a tench fish, or doctor fish, dissected to show the teeth on the surface of the upper jaw, and the horny pad on the lower jaw onto which they bite. Tench are a fresh water fish and member of the carp family, found throughout Eurasia. They dwell in muddy and weeded areas of lakes, feeding on bottom invertebrates and insect larvae. They have adapted to living in mud during winter, without food. Tench can grow up to 18 inches long, weigh 10 - 12 pounds, and can live for up to 20 years.
