    is most gratifying- and important, because this class is just that which requires most aid to combat the ravages of this disease. Proper precautions by the Sanitary Authority against the spread of tuberculosis are very necessary amongst the poorer classes, as they have not the means at their disposal for disinfec- tion of bedding, clothing, etc., that the well-to-do classes have. On receipt of a notification, it is customary in this District to carry out a complete plan of cleansing and disinfection, and leave instructions as to mode of life, disposal of sputum, and other precautions against spread of the disease. As yet very little advantage has been taken of your Council's offer to defray expenses of examination of sputum of sus- pected early cases of Tuberculosis. There is no hospital accommodation in this district for pulmonary tuberculosis, except at the Workhouse Infirmary, where a much-needed special pavilion is now in course of erection, capable of taking eighteen patients. I he Guardians are alive to the importance of treatment of early cases likely to secure permanent benefit or cure by being sent to a sanatorium, and such cases are sent away. Scarlet Fever. Scarlet Fever has been more or less prevalent throughout the year. Of the forty-six cases notified, forty-one were removed to the Isolation Hospital at Blechingley. There never appeared to be an epidemic, but the largest number of cases in any one part was at Blechingley, where there were sixteen cases, ten of which were from the Workhouse. I he Workhouse cases were probably infected at school, and were nearly all among the children of school age. In the Isolation Hospital, of the cases admitted there was one definitely not Scarlet Fever. The cases were mainly of a mild simple type. Complications arose in the following cases :— Nephritis i Enlarged glands ... ... 2 Ear discharge ... ... ... 1 Abscess... ... ?
