    J n the compilation of the following pages 1 have been careful to place before the reader the statements and opinions of the most highly esteemed authorities upon Forensic Medicine, and I must express my sincere thanks to my numerous medical friends for many valuable hints during the passage of the various sheets through the press. An experience of educational matters and of the student world extending over nearly a quarter of a century, has led me to hope that a work such as the present one may prove of some slight service, especially when bearing in mind the favourable reception that has been accorded to my last effort, The Essentials of Pathology and Morbid Anatomy. .My thanks are due to my publisher, for supplying the many excellent illustrations which the book presents, and also to Messrs. Longmans, who have kindly allowed casts of the botanical plates to be taken from Pereira's '• Manual of Materia Medica and Therapeutics. Lastly, I cannot too strongly impress upon the reader that this volume is not intended to exclude the use of the more elaborate treatises, but is merely to be employed as an intro- duction to an extremely comprehensive and difficult study, or to serve as a refresher to the memory of the student when upon the eve of his examination.
