Biographical note

The Fox family, originally from Falmouth, produced many medical men and, latterly, women. The Fox family, a Quaker medical dynasty originating in Falmouth, has comprised seven medical men in direct line down to Dr Robin Fox. The papers surveyed relate to the six generations prior to Dr. Robin Fox and include not just his direct ancestors but some of their siblings too (many of whom also practiced medicine).

In order, father to son, the central figures of the archive are:

Joseph Fox I (1729-1785)

Richard Fox (1764-1841)

Joseph Fox II (1792-1861)

Joseph John Fox (1821-1897)

Robert Fortescue Fox (1858-1910), long time medical superintendent of the spa at Strathpeffer

Sir Theodore Fortescue Fox (1899-1989), editor of the Lancet and, in retirement, director of the Family Planning Association.
