About this work

Description

"A Booke of divers receipts."

Many of the receipts are for 'Waters', and a few for cookery.

After fol. 36 some different hands are found, the latest dated entry being 1744 (fol. 51v).

On fol. 34 is the end of a receipt for 'The Earl of Strafords [sic] Gout Water', where the compiler states: 'I had this receipt of Sir George Wentworth who did highly praise it...' This gentleman was M.P. for Pontefract in 1640 but was disabled from sitting for his loyalty to Charles I, who later conferred a knighthood upon him and made him general of the royalist forces in Ireland. He died in 1660, aged 60.

At the bottom of fol. 35 'I had this receipt [A 'cleansing water for the skinne'] of Mrs. Dorothy Osburne [1627-1695] now Sr. Wm. Temples Lady'. She married in 1655.
