About this work

Description

Left, a thin man who takes medicines being attacked by devils (in the manner of Cruikshank's caricature 'The blue devils', though not copied from that work); three medicine bottles are on a table. Right, a fat man drinking, with bottles of wine on the floor and on a table

Either a man who took medicines ("What I was") changed to taking wine ("What I am") and found life more enjoyable; or, perhaps less probably, a man who took wine ("Wine") changed to "Physic" and found life less enjoyable as a result
