    This Tree is faid to grow wild in fume Parts of England $ but it is found in great Plenty in the mountainous parts of Germany. 4 This is the Fir which ought to be us’d in 4 the Shops according to the Difpenfatory $ but 4 not being fo common as the next, that generally 6 fupplies its place. Abies mas, Theophrafti, the common Fir or Pitch-Tree, Ray's Synop. 287. Picea, the Pitch-Tree, Park. —Major, the Pitch-Tree, Ger. *~~Ma]or prima, feu Abies rubra, the Greater Pitch-Tree, or the Red Fir, C. J9. This differs from the former, in that the Leaves are fmaller and flenderer, fharp and prickly at the Ends, ifanding thicker together, and encompaffing the Stalk without any Order. The Cones are longer than thofe of the Yew-leav’d, and hang down¬ wards. This is reported to grow wild in the mountainous Parts of Scotland. 4 The Leaves and Tops of both forts are ufed in 4 Diet Drinks for the Scurvy, for which they are c highly commended by the Inhabitants of the 4 Northern Countries. ’Tis faid a good Quantity 4 of them are put into Brunfwick Mum. 4 From this Tree, of which there grow great 4 Numbers in feveral Parts of Germany, is gotten 4 the Strafburg Turpentine^ which is clearer, of a 4 paler Colour, and of a thinner Confidence than 4 Venice Turpentine, of a bitterifh Tafte, and of 4 a pleafant Smell, a little like Lemon Peel. It 4 is of a mollifying, healing and cleaning Nature, 4 and belides its Ufes outwardly in Wounds and 4 Ulcers, is a good Diuretick, and of great 4 Ufe in a Gonorrhea and the Fluor albus \ given in 4 Glyfters, mixt with the Yolk of-an Egg, it is 4 very ferviceable againft the Stone and Gravel.
