About this work

Description

A man with long hair wearing armour, directed to left, looking back over his left shoulder, resting his right hand on a staff. As the Dresden 1992 catalogue states (loc. cit.), if this were to be the portrait of a general, one would expect appropriate headwear, such as a helmet. Its absence suggests that this could be a fantasy portrait. However there are comparable pictures of bare-headed men in armour such as a mezzotint by Wallerant Vaillant (Hollstein 191), and portraits of Prince Rupert of the Rhine
