Biographical note
George Stanley Faber (1773-1854), an Anglican theologian and author; He was educated at Hipperholme Grammar School and Oxford University; Faber was a fellow and tutor of Lincoln College, Oxford.
Sir William Fairbairn, first baronet (1789-1874), an engineer; He was president of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in 1854, and was president of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society (1855- 1860); He made great contribution to the Transactions of the Royal Society and to the proceedings of other learned societies; Fairbairn received the gold medal of the Royal Society in 1860, and was president of the British Association in 1861. He received the honorary LLD degree of Edinburgh in 1860 and of Cambridge in 1862; His work includes a handbook for engineers, an examination of the properties of iron, and a treatise on mills, all of which went through further editions.
