    CHAP. I. OF THE SUBSTANCES HITHERTO FOUND IN MINERAL WATERS. By Mineral Waters we mean such as either by their colour, taste, smell, or specific gra- vity, discover an unusual impregnation with some mineral substance, or fixed air—yet sea-water is not distinguished by that appel- lation. The substances hitherto discovered in Mineral Waters, are either of the class of aerial fluids, or of an acid, alkaline, or earthy nature, or neutral, or semi-neutral- ized substances, or hepatic, or saponaceous compounds, or extractive matter; this last, however, is rather of vegetable origin. §. I. OF AERIAL FLUIDS. i. Oxygen Air, first discovered in waters by Scheele. Its proportion is generally in- considerable. It has never been found with hepatic air, nor in ferruginous waters, being incompa- tible with such substances. r
