About this work

Description

The second in a three-part series which follows doctors and nurses from the NHS at work in Bastian Hospital, a battlefield ER in Afghanistan. We follow medics as they train for action, leaving behind full-time positions in the NHS, most of them for the first time. This part focuses in particular on the decision to amputate a limb. A soldier is brought by air ambulance from a land mine blast in a critical condition and has to have an emergency double amputation of both legs - when back home in the UK later he describes how he felt to discover he had no legs. An Afghan policeman who has shot himself in the leg while under the influence of heroine is brought in. And the fitness training programme for the medics is shown.
