    surgeon, who was considered eminent in his own town,, syringed the patient's ears every day, during six weeks: each application of the syringe produced intense pain, and no beneficial result followed. I saw him only six times, and, by the previous use of a lotion and proper application of the syringe, com- pletely restored the sense of hearing, it being a mere simple case; and a competent opera- tor would have saved the patient many years of misery, and the sacrifice of a valuable occupation, which he had been obliged to relinquish in consequence of his deafness. Were surgeons more particular in regard to the proper form and construction of the syringes they use, and could once see them properly applied, much inconvenience to their patients would be avoided; but, un- less instruction were given to them as to the manner of using even a well-constructed instrument, they will still go on occasioning pain, and rendering cases, originally of a simple nature, very serious, and difficult to cure.
