About this work
Description
Letters and Instructions to the Officers during the plague at Corfu, 1816. The 8 ll. are inserted loose, together with a part of a pen-drawn map of the region. This MS. is an official Letter-book containing copies of the correspondence from 19 March to 26 July, 1816, relating to the organization set up to deal with the plague. Of Major-General Phillips' work in connection with the outbreak, Dr. A. White in his 'Treatise of the Plague, more especially in the police management of that disease [etc.]', London, 1846, writes: 'The Major-General having been actively employed in the late plague at Malta, was particularly well fitted for this important charge; and I do not hesitate to acknowledge that it was owing to his excellent arrangements, and the uncommon zeal manifested by all concerned in this undertaking, that the calamity was so speedily and effectually subdued (p. 185)'. Produced in Corfu.
