About this work

Description

The child of a wealthy family probably used this rocking cradle. It is ornately carved in wood and inlaid with hundreds of tortoise and abalone shell mosaic pieces. It has a rounded head and foot piece with a supporting beam stretching between the two that also acts as a carrying handle. A cloth ‘curtain’ may also have been suspended off this to provide some shade. At best, most infants had simple wooden cribs.
