    aponeurosis laterally, and the dorsal tendons pass between these layers. Beneath the annular lig-ament are the six compartments for the following tendons, beginning on the radial side:—(1) extensores ossis metacarpi and primi internodii pollicis; (2) exten- sores carpi radialis, longior, and brevior; (3) exten- sor secundi internodii pollicis, crossing the two former very obliquely; (4) extensores digitorura, and in- dicis; (5) extensor minimi digiti; (6) exteusor carpi ulnaris. The synovial membrane investing their anterior surfaces being very thin and indistinct, is more frequently the seat of ganglion than that of the flexor tendons. The tendons of the extensor muscles, havina: arrived at the metacarpo-phalangeal articulacion. re- ceive the tendons of the lumbricales and iiterossei, whilst at the first phalangeal joint they dvide into three fasciculi, the central one being inserted into the base of the second phalanx, and the two lateral pass- ing on and reuniting, are inserted into lhe base of the ungual. They have no distinct synorial sheaths. Tlie radial artery at the wrist can be .'elt or seen beating between the tendons of the flexor carpi radialis and supinator longus, where it is quite super- ficial and easily secured. Accompaned by vense comites, it winds round the outside of the wrist, to gain the first interosseous space, when it enters the palm between the two heads of the firs; dorsal inter- osseous, and is crossed by the extensori of the thumb. It is readily secured at the base of tie well-marked hollow formed by these muscles. In disarticulation of the metacarpal bone of the thunb it stands a chance of being divided, but if the knfe be kept close to the bone it can be avoided. The most important
