    chemical analysis, laying stress upon the Sprudel; yet not one word is said as to the value of Bad Nauheim in heart disease. It remained for Dr. Beneke,i in 1872, to make known the good results in the treatment of heart disease. Its reputation gradually in- ' The late Professor F. W. Beneke, of Marburg, who practised during summer at Nauheim, was the first to direct our attention to this subject about twenty-five years ago, and under his guidance many of our heart cases derived very great benefit from courses of baths at Nauheim. In the more recent cases of valvular affection, with decided murmurs from the mitral or aortic valves, or both, we have repeatedly witnessed the murmur slowly but entirely disappear, and the heart become enabled to undergo a natural amount of exertion. This was, we may remark, at a time when no exercise cure was practised at Nauheim, and when the place was almost unknown out of Germany (Spas and Mineral Waters of Europe, Dr. Hermann Weber).
