About this work

Description

Polarised light micrograph of a transverse section through a mouse head across the nasal region. This slide mount was made by Thomas Russell between 1868 and 1901. Blood vessels were injected with dye before fixing and sectioning the tissue in order to visualise the capillary bed. Polarised light microscopy was used together with dark ground illumination to capture this image. Composite of 18 individual images stitched together. Horizontal width of image is 5 mm.
