    PREFACE. It is only after mucli consideration that it has been decided to proceed with the publication of the fol- lomng Treatise, which was left unfinished at the time of the author’s sudden and early death, but it has l)een felt that the responsibility of putting aside the labour of several years upon the highest and deepest subjects, containing much that might be of value in the progress of thought, was too great to incur ; and the question was finally settled after hearing from Mr. Carveth Eead, who kindly under- took to examine and arrange the MS., that it would be possible to prepare the greater part of it for the press. It thus becomes needful to offer some expla- nation of the circumstances which prevented the work from being finished, and, at the same time, it may be of general interest to give a short account of the author’s remarkable career. In this undertaking I have been much helped by the kindness of those friends who have contributed their recollections of my husband, and I would take this opj^ortunity to express my gratitude to them. My thanks are also due to Professor Groom Kobertson, who has taken a
