About this work

Description

These lithographs are derived from the dance of death frescos painted on the walls of the churchyard of the Dominican cloister in Basel. Executed between 1437 and 1441, these frescos were often altered and were finally removed in 1805 when damages could not be restored. Some of the wall fragments are preserved in the history museum in Basel

Lettering

Der Tod zum Edelmann. Nun kommet her, ihr edler Degen! Ihr müsset hier der Mannheit pflegen mit dem Tod, der niemand verschont. Gesegnet euch, so wird euch g'lohnt. Antwort des Edelmanns. Ich hab' gar manchen Mann erschreckt, der mit dem Harnisch war bedeckt: nun ficht mit mir der grimme Tod, und bringt mich gar in grosse Noth. Bears number top right : No. 18.
