A young man, bare headed but otherwise fully dressed, is touching with a bow a girl sitting on his left. There is a page of music on her right thigh. John Grand-Carteret, in an interesting comparison between English and French erotic art at the turn of the eighteenth century, mentions, in addition to Rowlandson, Richard Newton as a master of realism in this field. He gives reproductions of three very characteristic cartoons by Newton. The first of these is ' Which way shall I turn me? ' The drawing represents a gourmet who has the choice between the pleasures of the table and the pleasures of love, in the person of a pretty young woman lying on a settee. In 6 Old Goats at the Sale of a French Kid', Cupid is auctioning a Paris beauty who is coquettishly exhibiting her charms on the auctioneer's table. A large number of men are eagerly watching her. Cupid cries: ' The last bid was fifty-two pounds a year, a carriage and pony. Come, gentlemen, make a reasonable bid for this Paris beauty. Look at her. What grace, what elegance! You're all amazed. (Admiration and amazement are portrayed by the artist in the most exquisite manner.) Five hundred a year. Thank you, sir. Five hundred it is.' The third drawing [652]
