The battle of Naseby. This battle which gave the fatal turn to the kings affairs happen'd on the 14 June 1645 the first charge was given by the right wing of horse & foot commanded by Prince Rupert & his brother who bore down all before them; the left wing & the northern horse engaging Cromwell & the enemies right wing against odds of num.rs & ye advantage ground were put to flight. The K. at the head of his reserve of horse was even ready to charge those which pursued his left wing which might have recover'd the misfortune when on a sudden such a panick fear siezed on them that they all ran near a quarter of a mile without stopping wch. happen'd upon an uncommon accident for ye Scotch Earl of Carneworth on a sudden laid his hand on ye K.s bridle crying out wth. 2 or 3 oaths, will you go upon yr. death in an instant & before his Maj.y understood what he would have, turn'd his Horse round upon wch. a word run thro' the troops, march to the right wch. unfortunately led them from charging ye enemy & assisting their own men & caused them all to turn their horses & ride upon ye spur as if every man was to shift for himself after this disorder ye K. not being able to prevail wth. his troops to rally & charge ye enemy he retreated as well as he could & left Fairfax entire master of the field. … La bataille de Naisby ... L'aile droite de cavalerie et infanterie commandée par le Prince Runert et son frere, commencea l'attaque, ils firent tout plier devant eux. L'aile gauche et la cavalerie de Northorn chargeant Cromwell et l'aile droite enemie contre un nombre superieur et l'avantage du terrain furent mises et fuites. On vit le roy a la tete de son corps de reserve de cavalerie pret a charger ceux qui poursuivoient son aile gauche qui auroit pu reparer le malheur, quand tout a coup une telle frayeur panique s'empara d'eux qu'ils fuirent tout pres d'un quart mille sans s'arreter, ce qui fut causé par un accident extraordinaire. Car le comte de Carnworth ecossois saisit tout d'un coup la bride du chaval du roy s'ecriant avec deux ou trois serments, Voulez vous aller chercher votre mort, dans un instant, et avant que sa Majesté comprit ce qu'il vouloit dire il fit faire le tour de son cheval, sur quoi le mot fut répandu parmi les troupes de marcher a la droite ce qui les empecha malheureusem.nt de charger l'enemi, et d'assister leur gens, et leur fit tous tourner leurs chevaux et prendre le galop, comme si on eut crie, suave qui peut, après ce désordre, n'étant pas au pouvoir du roy de ralier ses troupes, et charger l'enemi, il fit sa retraite le mieux qu'il put et laissa Fairfax entierem.nt maitre du champs de bataille.
