The house shown in this print was, according to W. Robinson, The history and antiquities of the parish of Hackney, London, 1842 [pp.88-91], built in 1590. Used as a residence by John Okey, one of the Cromwellians who signed the death warrant of Charles I, then by John Busch, who was later gardener to the Empress Catherine II. In 1792 the house and land came into the possession of the Loddige family. Conrad Loddige made a garden of fifteen acres and grew 200 species of plant, including exotics
