About this work

Description

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL): liver This image shows a high power view of a section of liver. Leishmania sp. amastigotes are clearly seen within Kupffer cells in the sinusoids. H&E stain. The parasitized Kupffer cells may form small granulomas and block the blood vessels. This may cause tissue necrosis, although damage to the liver cells (hepatocytes) is rare.
