Omnibus numeris virtutis divitis Edoardi sexti Angliae &c. regis dominii sui Bridewell dicti civibus suis Londinensibus pro hospitalibus, in usum pauperum et eiusdem civitatis donatio βασιλικη. To the right worshipfull Wm. Benn Esq., Alderman President. The worshipfull Rob.t Alsop Esq.r, Alderman, Treasurer. Joseph Ayliffe Esq. Auditor-General. And to the hon.ble and worshipfull the rest of the Governors of the hospitals of Bridewell and Bethlem. This plate is most humbly inscribed and engraved by their obedient servant G. Vertue ... Lettering continues: Bridewell, formerly the palace of K. John. K. Henry 8 rebuilt it A.o 1522. K. Edward VI, who is thus represented giving the charter to the Lord Mayor, Sir George Barnes K.t and the Aldermen of the City of London for these hospitals. On the right of ye throne is ye L.d Chancellor, Tho. Goodrick B.p of Ely, standing. On the left is the Master of ye Rolls, S.r Rob.t Bowes. W.m Earl of Pembroke K.t of the Garter. And the face of Hans Holbein is there, observing the ceremony.
