About this work

Description

The portrait of Florence Nightingale holding a document is taken from a photograph of her taken by the London Stereoscopic Company, taken at the request of Queen Victoria in 1856, but wearing a different dress (the dress is shown in another photograph of her, attributed to Goodman.). The engraving of the hospital at Scutari is adapted from parts of a lithograph "Florence Nightingale in the Military Hospital at Scutari" by J.A. Benwell, though the figure of Nightingale herself is taken from another source. That source may be the Waterloo Place sculpture of Nightingale by A.G. Walker: in both the statue and the banknote, she is hitching up her skirts with her left hand and holding an "Aladdin's lamp" in her right hand
