Description
Mephistopheles offeres to Gladstone a steaming potion labelled "Ambition". Upper left, a vision of Britannia as Marguerite. Apparently a foreshadowing of the "Hawarden Kite", a leak to the press on 12 December to the effect that Gladstone favoured Home Rule in Ireland, leading the Irish Nationalists to switch their support from the Conservatives to Gladstone's Liberal Party, thus giving the latter a parliamentary majority
