    aks ay Observations and experiments elsewhere are valuable guides to the observations and experiments required here, but it cannot be too strongly insisted on that the vesults of such observations elsewhere cannot be taken as guides to practical working here. The local conditions are different and it is only by the results of local determinations that complicated systems can be adapted to meet the local circumstances. The effect of the water supply on the occurrence of disease cannot be determined at present. The areas of the town where other waters are used are so extensive that the general rate of intestinal disease cannot be fairly attributed to town water. The occurrence of Typhoid amongst Europeans who drink exclusively town water is possibly due to the contaminated water used for the fraudulent dilution of milk and cannot be fairly attributed to the town water. The gaol is supplied only by town water but this is boiled before use so that the freedom of the occupants of that institution from intestinal disease cannot be attributed entirely to the purity of the water. Analyses have shown that chemically the water is very pure and free from the chemical products of the decay of animal or vegetable matter. In_ this it differs from the Singapore waters which contain a considerable amount of Albumenoid Ammonia. The absence of smell and taste in the Ampang and Klang waters is probably to be attributed to this purity and the slower rate at which organisms grow through the filter bed as compared with Singapore is perhaps due to the same cause.
