SiR, We have the honor to acknowledge the receipt. of your letter of the 7th of September, transmitting copy of a letter from Messrs. Palmer & Company with list of books and manuscripts belonging to the estate of the late Colonel Mackenzie, and directing us to form ourselves into a Committee for examining and reporting whether it would be advisable for Government tv purchase any of the books or manuscripts in question, as well as for reporting upon their pecuniary value, In obedience to the instructions thus received, we proceed to submit our report. The books and manuscripts amount in all to 212 volumes or parcels, of which 33 are in the Malay language and Character, and 66 in the Javanese language and Character. There are 94 manu- scripts in the Dutch and English language, and 19 printed books in Dutch. With regard to the native manuscripts we find it a matter of considerable difficulty to form a just pecuniary appreciation of them.
