"An investigation on the soft white matter which accumulates on the teeth and between them", S. Steinberg (from Sovremenaya Meditsina [Contemporary Medicine] nos.20 and 24, 1862, Kiev), translated literally from Russian by Cecil A. Hoare, 1922.

"Dental health"; press release, Ministry of Health Press Office, 1963, setting out what parents can do to ensure their children have healthy teeth.

The translation of the paper by Steinberg was presumably produced within the former Wellcome Bureau of Scientific Research. The circumstances under which the Ministry of Health press release was added to the Library's pamphlet holdings are not recorded.

Biographical note

Cecil Arthur Hoare (6 March 1892 – 23 August 1984) FRS was a British protozoologist and parasitologist. He was born in 1892 in Middelburg, Netherlands, the son of a British journalist and a Russian opera singer. He studied Biology at the State University of St Petersburg (later Petrograd) from 1912 to 1917 and then became a research fellow at Petrograd University. After internment during the Russian Revolution he left Russia in 1920 and joined the Wellcome Bureau of Scientific Research in London, working under Charles Morley Wenyon as Protozoologist; in 1923 he became Head of the Department of Protozoology and held this post for 34 years until his retirement in 1957. He died in 1984. An obituary by L.G. Goodwin and L.J. Bruce-Chwatt was published in Biographical Memoirs of Fellows of the Royal Society, Vol. 31, November 1985.
