![INTRODUCTION. In composing this Essay on a disease which has so frequently resisted the most powerful means that our art possesses, and in regard to'the treatment of which so much difference of opinion exists, I have constantly kept in mind the instruction of the Jack- sonian Committee, that the “ number and importance of facts will be considered principal points of excel- lence.” For in the study of a disease, the nature of which is as yet involved in obscurity, it is only by collecting and comparing facts that such legitimate deductions can be formed as will guide us to a know- ledge of those principles by which its treatment should be regulated.
