About this work

Description

Negative stain, transmission electron micrograph of a beta2-microglobulin fibril sample that was grown in vitro under agitated conditions. Amyloid fibrils are formed through a complex assembly process that result in fibrils, from which small fragments can break off to seed new fibrils, like a dandelion clock that disperses with the wind. Amyloid assembly results in numerous human diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) and diabetes.
