About this work

Description

"A deepening alarm about the work of scientist and technologists became evident in the 1960s and 1970s with the growth of the environmental movement and the alternative technology movement. And the women's liberation movement campaigned against high technology medicine and against sexism in medical research and practice, while the trades unions became more concerned with research practices in health and safety at work. From these campaigns it became clear that science and technology are dominated by privileged interests. The problems posed for science and technology to tackle arise in definite social contexts, dominated by the twin aims of profit, and of control of the population by employers, manager and the state. The pamphlet is for activists in the socialist and trade union movement, the Labour Party, the women's liberation movement, and community groups. It is about these recent advances in our understanding of how the social apparatus of science and technology serves the needs of capital rather than the needs of the people. This understanding has reached the point where we can outline a possible socialist policy for science and technology."-- Provided by publisher.
