About this work

Description

Several of the sitters were connected with the North London Collegiate School for Girls. Edith Aitken taught science at the school from 1891 to 1899. Mrs Bryant was Sophie Willock Bryant, headmistress. The Rev Septimus Buss taught scripture. Sophie Nicholls travelled in Palestine in 1910-1911 as a Frances Mary Buss travelling scholar. A Miss Wood also taught at the school. Among the other persons, Rudolf Cyriax was the nephew of Oscar Eckenstein, being the son of Anna Lina Antonia Romana Eckenstein, the sister of Oscar. A.D. Godley was a classical scholar, Fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford, and a writer of light verse. Lucien Alphonse Legros was the son of the artist Professor Alphonse Legros. Joseph Collier F.R.C.S. was a surgeon in Manchester
