    INTRODUCTION. The council of the Medical Society of London, having resolved, that I be requested to publish the annual Oration, which I was appointed to <leliver; and this request having been urged by many Fellows and Auditors present; I feel it a duty to obey the resolutions of the one, and to comply with the wishes of the other. It affords me the opportunity of presenting to the public, an analysis of a few of those important subjects, which I have amply detailed in other works. The power, the nature, and the ends, of life, or vitality, are so little understood, and have been so shamefully outraged by Richerand, in a Physiological Book which is in general circulation; that I have deemed it a duty to expose the wicked
