![PROLOGUE they are susceptible to specific drugs, and the merely curious may learn that they carry a whole host of genetic traits that bear directly on the way they live. The counselors themselves' are crucial to this process. They are the first contact that most people have with what may be the most profoundly personal of all the advances of the biological revolution. They are the translators of the vital secrets of the genes. The clinic closes before lunch and the patients disappear. After the counseling sessions, it is up to them to decide how they will treat what they have learned. They can act on their new knowledge or ignore it. They can avoid things that may be harmful or accept the risks. Either way, they have discov¬ ered things that may influence the way they, or their chil¬ dren, choose to live.
