    the formation of bougies, which is done in the following manner: While the li- quid {till continues warm, let a piece of fine old linen be dipped in it, taking care with a fpatula to cover the whole of it. If the melted liquor be of a proper heat, no more of the plafter will adhere to the linen than is neceffary ; but as air bubbles are apt to rife and produce inequalities on the furface of the cloth, the fpatula made ufe of mould be fomewhat warmer than the plafter, and by means of it the whole mould be made as fmooth as pomble. The plafter might indeed by fpread entirely with the fpatula; but this is not only at- tended with more trouble, but it does not cover the cloth with fufficient equa- lity. The cloth being fufheiently cold, may be immediately formed into bougies, and the whole mould, in the firft place, be cut into the number that is meant to be made. The moft exact method of doing this is by means cf a (harp pointed knife direct- ed by a rule. The pieces ihould be eleven inches
