    o HEALTH. Health may be defined as the integrity of every structure, and the perfect and harmonious play of every function. Health differs widely in different persons, and in the same person at different times. The terms perfect, good, feeble, delicate, show how, generally, the difference in degree is recog- nised, so that there may be very great and marked departure from the ideal standard of health. Besides those differences hi the degree of health, tempera- ment acts an important part; each temperament is liable to a different class of diseases; the sanguine to acute inflammations, and hoomorrhage; the phleg- matic to congestions and subacute inflammations, to glandtilar and. tubercular diseases; the bilious to disorders of the digestive organs, to rheumatism, to lowness of spirits and melancholy; and the nervous to disorders of the nervous system and to mental derangement. Temperament, diathesis, hereditary predisposition, and idiosyncrasy constitute marked differences be- tween man and man; and the treatment of disease must necessarily be influenced by our knowledge of those differences.
