Forbes found his way back to the camp and set out with the party to find an Indian he knew of, who was able to supply them with provisions and agreed to guide them to the Kennebeck river. Unfortunately the Indian’s wife was taken ill and he had to give Forbes a plan of the route. Fresh difficulties were met with and the wife and four children were left at another camp. After ten days Forbes and his son were guided by some hunters to Norridgewock and a relief party set out. The first attempt failed and when his wife was found fifty days had elapsed, and three of the children were dead.
