    very alkaline, which unites with acids giving salts in well defined crystals. The chloropla- tinate being less soluble in water than the salts, than the corresponding salts of neurine, this property indicates the method of separating the two bases so similar and so often blended to- gether. Heat splits up choline into glycol and trimethlamine OH^3NO=eH^03-f (CH3)3N ; is that doubtless which explains the presence of trimethylamine in the products of a great number of putrefactions. The ordinary alkaline reagents precipitate both choline and neuridine. They do not reduce the ferricyanide and ferrichlorides. Choline is less toxic than the neurine. Muscarine discovered by Schmiedberg and Koppe in the toadstool,— ae'aricus inuscarius. Schmiedbern and Har- nack have accomplished its synthesis by oxy- dizing choline with nitric acid ; this permits muscarine to be regarded as an aldehydic alkaloid. (CH3)3^ C^H3Q^ N.OH.
